- Count only weekdays
Michigan defines a business day as Monday through Friday, so Saturday and Sunday do not count toward your three days. That gives you more calendar time than in Saturday-counting states.
- Refuse an early courier pickup
The seller may not send a courier to collect your payment before the three days are up, under MCL 445.112(1). If one arrives, you may turn them away.
- Cancel in writing within the window
Mail or deliver written cancellation to the seller by midnight of the third business day. Mailed notice counts on deposit.
- Complain if a valid cancellation is refused
File a complaint with the Michigan Department of Attorney General, Consumer Protection Team.
If a seller refuses a timely, valid cancellation, a state consumer-protection office can take your complaint and enforce the cooling-off rules.

What Michigan buyers get wrong about cancelling
Michigan pairs an ordinary three-day cancellation right with a couple of unusual protections. Under MCL 445.112 you can cancel a home solicitation sale of more than 25 dollars until midnight of the third business day, and because Michigan defines a business day as Monday through Friday, Saturday does not count, the opposite of neighboring Maryland. Two features stand out. Michigan bans the seller from sending a courier to your door to collect your payment before the three days are up, and that ban must be printed in the contract itself. And Michigan's notice type rule is relative: the cancellation notice must be at least ten-point bold and two points larger than the contract text, so a seller cannot bury it by enlarging everything else. Michigan also has the widest exclusion list around, including door-to-door natural gas and electricity supplier sales, so if someone signs you up to switch energy suppliers at the door, the Act does not cover it. A separate free-gift-presentation law gives three business days and a complete refund for larger prize-inducement sales, and lets you keep the gift either way. Does the weekend count toward my three days in Michigan?
No. MCL 445.111(c) defines a business day as Monday through Friday, excluding listed holidays, so Saturday and Sunday do not count toward your three days.
Someone signed me up to switch my electricity supplier at the door. Can I cancel under this Act?
Not under the Home Solicitation Sales Act. MCL 445.113(6) excludes natural gas and electricity sales by regulated utilities and licensed alternative suppliers. Check the federal rule and your supplier's own terms.
Can they send a courier to pick up my check the next day?
No. MCL 445.112(1) bars a courier or third party from collecting your payment at your residence until the cancellation period expires, and the ban must be stated in the contract.
I attended a free-gift presentation and spent 900 dollars. Different rule?
Yes. MCL 445.931 gives a separate three-business-day right with a complete refund where the sale is 500 dollars or more and the inducement was worth more than 25 dollars, and you keep the gift either way.
