Right to Cancel a Purchase in Wyoming
How long you have to cancel a door-to-door purchase in Wyoming, the longer windows for timeshares and other categories, and why there is no general three-day right to return a car. Cited to the statute.
When the cooling-off right applies in Wyoming
The door-to-door window, the categories with their own clocks, and the purchases that are not covered.
| When it applies | What it means |
|---|---|
| Three business days after signing | The buyer may cancel until midnight of the third business day after signing a compliant agreement, under Wyo. Stat. § 40-14-252(a). Until the seller complies with the notice rule, you may cancel by simply notifying it. |
| 25 dollars or more, credit only | The right reaches a consumer credit sale of 25 dollars or more, under § 40-14-251. Unlike some states, an exact 25 dollar sale is covered. A cash purchase gets no state cooling-off right. |
| Covers telephone pitches | The definition reaches a personal solicitation by face-to-face confrontation or telephone at a place other than the seller's business. The notice must be in the same language the salesperson used to pitch you. |
| Ten-day refund, 20-day goods | The seller must refund within ten days, under § 40-14-254. If it does not demand delivered goods within twenty days, they become yours, at the seller's risk meanwhile, and it gets no compensation for services. |
| When there is no right | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cash sales | A cash door-to-door purchase is outside the statute, because it reaches only consumer credit sales. The federal FTC rule is then the only floor. |
| Buyer-initiated phone and mail sales | A sale consummated entirely by telephone or mail that you initiated is excluded, along with sales under a preexisting revolving charge account and sales after prior negotiations at a fixed location. |
| Emergency with a substantial start | A buyer-requested emergency purchase is excluded where the seller substantially began before your notice and the goods cannot be returned in substantially as good condition. |
What you can do right now
Concrete, neutral steps to cancel a covered purchase in Wyoming. This is consumer information, not legal advice.
- Check whether you financed the purchase
Wyoming's three-day right reaches only consumer credit sales. If you paid cash, use the federal FTC rule, which gives three business days for a sale of 25 dollars or more at your home.
- Cancel in writing within the window
Mail written cancellation before midnight of the third business day. If you got no compliant notice, you may cancel simply by notifying the seller.
- Watch the language of the notice
The cancellation notice must be in the same language the salesperson used to pitch you, under § 40-14-253. A mismatched-language notice is defective.
- Complain if a valid cancellation is refused
File a complaint with the Wyoming Attorney General, Consumer Protection and Antitrust Unit.
If a seller refuses a timely, valid cancellation, a state consumer-protection office can take your complaint and enforce the cooling-off rules.

What Wyoming buyers get wrong about cancelling
Wyoming's home solicitation right reaches more than the doorstep. Under Wyo. Stat. § 40-14-251, the definition covers a personal solicitation by face-to-face confrontation or telephone at a place other than the seller's business, so a seller-initiated phone pitch that ends in a credit sale is inside the statute. The base right under § 40-14-252 gives three business days to cancel a home solicitation sale of 25 dollars or more, and unlike some neighboring states, a sale of exactly 25 dollars is covered. The catch is that Wyoming is credit-only: pay cash at the door and state law does nothing, so the federal FTC rule is your floor. Wyoming also protects buyers pitched in another language: the cancellation notice must be in the same language the salesperson used to pitch you, in ten-point boldface on a detachable duplicate form. While you hold the goods waiting for pickup, they are at the seller's risk, and after twenty days without a demand they become yours free. And if some other law also gives you a rescission right, you may choose which to proceed under. Common questions
The pitch was in Spanish but the contract was in English. Is that a problem in Wyoming?
Yes. Section 40-14-253 requires the buyer's-rights statement and the notice of cancellation form to be in the same language as the sales presentation.
They sold it to me over the phone. Does Wyoming's three-day rule apply?
Yes if it was a credit sale of 25 dollars or more and the seller initiated the call, but not if you initiated it and the sale was consummated entirely by telephone or mail.
I paid cash at the door. Am I covered?
No. Section 40-14-251 covers only consumer credit sales. The federal 16 C.F.R. Part 429 rule is your floor, at 25 dollars or more at your home.
