Sales Tax Calculator by State
Estimate the sales tax and total on a purchase for 2026. Pick your state to run a price against its combined rate — the state base plus the population-weighted average local tax. This is a state + average local estimate, not an address-exact ZIP lookup.
Combined sales tax rate, by state
State base plus average local rate, ranked highest to lowest. Your own rate depends on your city and county — open your state to run a price.

Each calculator uses the same 2026 data with that state’s own rates.
How the sales tax calculator works
Each estimate multiplies your purchase price by the state base rate plus the average local rate. It is deliberately not an address-exact ZIP lookup — the figure is a statewide average, so your real rate depends on your city, county, and any special district, and can be higher or lower. Two states here — Michigan and Massachusetts — allow no local tax, so their rate is identical everywhere.
Keep three things in mind: the rate is a statewide average, not address-exact; groceries and prescription drugs are exempt or reduced in most states, so a blended rate over-taxes them; and clothing rules vary sharply (Pennsylvania and New Jersey exempt most clothing, Massachusetts up to $175 per item, New York under $110). These are 2026 estimates for general merchandise. This is general information, not tax advice.
